Since 1991, we’ve been helping manufacturers in the semiconductor, pharma and other high-technology industries to test and risk assess electrical equipment in cleanrooms, labs, production facilities and other sites that operate high-voltage applications across the UK.
EMF (Electromagnetic Field) testing measures and controls the levels of EMF emissions people are exposed to when using electrical equipment. It is particularly important for sites operating high-current or high-voltage applications.
If results exceed the ELVs set out in the CEMFAW Regulations, remedial action is required — this can include reviewing operating modes, adjusting zoning, or adding physical controls to reduce exposure. IES includes remedial solutions as standard, so non-compliance comes with a clear fix, not just a report.
A full service covers on-site measurement using specialist probes, a verbal debrief after testing, and a written report comparing results against relevant ELVs. Where equipment is non-compliant, it should also include remedial recommendations. IES has delivered this across semiconductor, pharmaceutical, defence and manufacturing sites since 1991.
Cost depends on site size, the number of equipment items or zones being assessed, and whether it's a one-off or an annual contract. Sites with multiple high-emission sources — fab tools, plasma equipment, RF welding — need more testing points and time, which raises the cost. IES scopes each project individually and quotes based on the actual equipment and environment involved.
Electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions are an important consideration for sites that operate high current or high radio frequency levels—for example, plasma machines, semiconductor wafers, fab tools and RF welding tools.
The government has outlined the responsibility of employers to assess the levels of EMF and address potential risks of high levels for employees—including adverse health effects—in the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work (CEMFAW) Regulations 2016.
Manufacturers have a duty to carry out EMF testing to confirm EMF exposure levels and ensure that they are below the exposure limit values (ELVs) specified in the CEMFAW Regulations.
Manufacturers should consider conducting regular tests to ensure compliance—many choose to do this annually. This helps cover wear and tear and can be considered as part of maintenance.
